A. Shop Painting

- Remove all weld spatters and welding slag; grind sharp edges and rough welds to a smooth contour before blast cleaning.

- Prime coat shall be applied before any visible rusting occurs and never later than eight hours after blast cleaning.

- Paint type and procedure shall be as shown in the appendix, and as noted on the drawings.

B. Field Welded Connections

• The shop prime coat shall not be applied within 25mm of field weld areas on all members to be connected.

• Weld spatter and slag shall be removed after welding and the area prepared and painted according to the original paint specification.

• Unless otherwise specified, area around the field weld shall be painted by all specified coats for a minimum distance of 250 mm on each side of the field weld after welding.

C. Paint Finish

• All edges and areas difficult to spray shall receive a stripe coat of each specified coat. The stripe coat is to be applied by brush unless another method is approved in writing by the Coating Manufacturer and approved by the Engineer od Record.

• When multiple coats of the same coating are specified each coat shall be a different colour.

• Lack of dry film thickness, runs, sags, blisters, pin holes, blushing, craters, hazing, lack of opacity, dry spray, overspray, holidays, crazing, bubbling, lack of adhesion and other visual defects numbering more than five coating defects per square meter will be rejected and will require recoating. Removal of previous coating may be required before repainting at the discretion of the Engineer of Record.

D. Quality Control Records

• Unifab will provide to a minimum (as required);

• Specification Review report which notes the confirmation of a comprehensive specification review c/w any clarification requests. • Pre-in specification report which notes any fabrication or design defects, surface contamination and the condition of the existing coating (if applicable) and any conditions which may interface with performance of the work

• Materials report which notes the brand name, batch number, manufacturing date, storage requirements and actual storage conditions for all materials used. This includes but is not limited to abrasive, inhibitors, solvents, coatings and additives; if applicable a letter of conformance from the Coating Manufacturer shall be attached to this report.

• Pre-Cleaning report which notes the pre-cleaning method used and the standard achieved. Where applicable the level of non-visual contaminates residual on the cleaned surface shall be noted.

• Surface Preparation report which notes the date, time, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, surface temperature, surface profile (if applicable) and standard achieved.

• Coating Mixing report which notes the date, time, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, surface temperature, coating temperature, percentage of thinner (if applicable), mixing method, duration of each mix, induction time of each mix (if applicable), brand name and batch number of all components mixed.

• Coating Application report which notes the date, time, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, surface temperature, coating temperature, duration from the end of surface preparation and the start of coating application, duration of coating application, wet film thickness and recoat window if applicable.

• Coating Inspection report which notes the date, time, dry film thickness of each coat and the total dry film thickness of the final coating system, location of any coating defects such as runs, sags, blisters, pinholes, blushing, craters, hazing, lack of opacity, dry spray, overspray, holidays, crazing, bubbling, lack of adhesion or any other defects specifically disallowed. This report will note the results of any specified adhesion tests.

• Final Inspection report which notes the date, time and the final condition of the coating. This report will reference any Non-conformance reports.

• Non-conformance report which notes the date., time, area of non-conformance, nature of non-conformance, apparent cause of non-conformance, recommendation disposition of non-conformance, recommended action, and final disposition of the non-conforming item. One Non-conformance report will be issued for each non-conforming item unless otherwise approved by the Engineer of Record.
